This week we kicked off a virtual workshop series!
MSP OpenIDEO collaborates online
Who says a workshop can't be digital? November's session included 3 lightening exercises, 1 core activity and lots of low-key conversation as we hacked on the current OpenIDEO challenge, Reinventing Higher Education. There were videos, solo time, group work and a surprise guest.
Nine awesome OpenIDEOers came to check it out, and each of them brought it. We discussed the problem through our own lenses, bringing different perspectives and thoughtful collaboration.
The challenge is in the research phase... So we chose to focus the night on design thinking methods that are specifically great at the beginning of projects, when people need to generate lots of ideas, inspiration and insight. We practiced:
- Framing and reframing the problem
- Defining our audience (including identifying mainstreams & outliers)
- and Interviewing
Robert, a last year Business student at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, was our surprise guest who let us all probe him on his experience with higher education. We asked him about his background, goals and outlook on his future.
Just 15 minutes with Robert provided a good boost for us to get out there and start this conversation with more people! The night ended with a challenge from me, some homework.. dive deeper into one of these methods and further your research:
- Guided tours (schools, dorms, etc)
- Immersion (day in the life)
- Analogous Inspiration
I'm eager to see what happens next! I hear some chapter members are posting their research on OpenIDEO.com and exploring their ideas further. That's why we do this! We are facilitating regular, accessible touch bases on a monthly basis so we can discover things collaboratively and engage deeper with each challenge.
Let's keep on talking!
We look forward to growing this chapter, and hopefully seeing you at the next virtual workshop! Check out more conversation and upcoming events on our official MSP OpenIDEO Chapter Page.
