This weekend we celebrate Independence Day. We will light off fireworks and host barbecues and let freedom ring. But what does freedom and independence actually mean to us? That’s a loaded question colored by many cultures, each individual with a different world view and daily life.
If you take a look at the current OpenIDEO challenges, it’s clear to see we work to solve problems for ALL people. Whether it’s greater access to health care, expanding learning or empowering our low-income communities… we exist to help fellow humans. We design for social impact.
This holiday weekend take some time to think deeply about freedom. Who needs to feel more free? How can we help people become more independent in their daily lives?
We’re challenging you to design a solution that helps someone become more independent.
Your innovation could be something physical out in the community, a new type of service, a digital tool or product line… the possibilities are endless. Think about someone you care about helping and go from there. Here are some communities in need that might spark your interest…
Who to design for?
Urban slum communities
Low-income communities (in MSP)
Elderly and youth
Disabled and special needs citizens
Extremely rural communities
Women and girls
The homeless and poverty stricken
What to send us? At minimum we’re asking for a 300-500 word description of your innovation. Of course we encourage you to send more, any imagery or reference material helps strengthen your concept. In your presentation, concisely answer the questions:
What’s it for?
Who’s it for?
How will this change the user’s freedom/independence?
What’s the deadline? You will have one month from July 4th to submit an idea (August 4, 2016). Use your day off to empathize with communities who need support and design a way for them to be more independent.
This challenge is open to everyone and we encourage small teams to work together to pitch an idea.
What’s in it for me? Our judges will pick winning ideas to be featured on or blog along with a spotlight post about you and your business. Winners will receive a book bundle which includes Change by Design, Jugaad Innovation, What to Do When It's Your Turn, and more. Also, you'll receive participation points and a winner's badge next to your photo on our website.
All of our challenges are designed to give you more design-thinking practice. This is your opportunity to spend some time leading with empathy, learning through design, and innovating for the greater good.
Let freedom ring!
